Battle to London

29 May 2010 – 31 May 2010

“We must embrace pain and burn it as fuel for our journey” – Kenji Miyazawa

What follows is a chronological timeline of the small battles and the large battles that James and I faced in our war with distance and time in order to reach London.

Koh Phangan to Bangkok –            13.5 hours

Bangkok airport –                             8 hours

Bangkok to Abu Dhabi –                  6.25 hours

Abu Dhabi airport –                          14.5 hours

Abu Dhabi to London –                     7.75 hours

Total Travel Time –

50 hours

Moments of misery:

  • Sweating profusely between piers in Koh Phangan with the knowledge that clean clothes and a shower would be many hours away
  • Arrival at Bangkok airport to be told we couldn’t check in for 6 hours
  • Sleeping on a tiled floor and later a baggage trolley in Bangkok airport
  • Moment of realisation in Abu Dhabi that we didn’t have a 3 hour stop over but rather 14.5 hours
  • Stepping out into 42 + degree heat in Abu Dhabi
  • Wondering around Abu Dhabi airport trying to find newspaper or paper towels that I could wrap myself in to counteract the freezing cold air-conditioning temperature in order to allow myself a few hours sleep on the floor

Overall misery factor:

High

  1. jet lag much???

    • Not so bad on the jet lag department. The stopover in Abu Dhabi probably helped break up the distance and let us adjust midway. Although I wouldn’t recommend the stopover for anyone else.
