We had one night in a hostel in Ljubljana (Austria), essentially another stopover to break up the driving hours. Ljubljana’s university is making its way onto the European university scene, the town has a good ‘university’ feel to it despite us being there during the holiday season

Slovenia is known for its horses, they can breed them to dance in Slovenia and in recognition of the brilliant horses of Slovenia I decided to eat one. I was so hungry that day ‘I could eat a horse’ however I settled for just part of one. ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do’ – well I was in Slovenia and the Slovenians eat horse steaks.
It was delicious, my first foal steak ever, done medium rare and accompanied with a Union beer, fantastic!

The following day we departed Slovenia for Austria, we actually crossed the border in the middle of a huge tunnel, it easily took five minutes to pass through. They know how to build tunnels in Europe.
On our way to Vienna (Austria) our journey was broken up by a stop at Lake Bled. Our group was encouraged to take a $10 Euro row boat trip to the island in the middle of the lake, the island wasn’t very far away and being a cheapskate I politely declined paying $10 Euros and swam it in roughly 15 minutes. A few of the guys made the swim back with me; the water was a beautiful temperature, the landscape superb, it was a fantastic swim in a beautiful environment; highly recommended.
