Bryce Canyon Fairyland Loop Trail

In my previous post on Bryce Canyon National Park I offered my recommended itinerary if you only have one day to spend in Bryce Canyon. If however you have more time then there are some great hiking opportunities for you to explore, one such hike we did was the Bryce Canyon Fairyland Loop Trail.

Departing from the Fairyland Point car park the Fairyland Loop Trail is unique in that you can get to the start without passing through the park ranger fee booth, call me a cheap skate but I found that interesting. However, if you want to explore national parks the annual parks pass is very reasonably priced and covers entry to all US national parks and forests. The ‘parks pass’ can be purchased from national park fee booths all over the country, sometimes the pass is not obviously advertised however you just need to ask.

Bryce Canyon Layered Rock Formations

The Bryce Canyon Fairyland Loop Trail is just shy of 13km and pretty easy going – while I could have done it in jandals (hard core) my running shoes were more appropriate and I’m glad I wore them. If you have hiking boots then they’d be better still. It took us three and a half hours to complete the loop.

Along the trail we were constantly surrounded by Bryce Canyon’s famous red rock formations, hoodoos and so forth. Despite this there were no real ‘stand out’ features or views along the hiking trail in my mind, it was a very pleasant walk but had no final amazing view point to reach or brilliant rock formation to look forward to. Saying this it’s still a very pleasant and worthwhile hike and it has an added bonus of not being busy; 95% of the time we were alone which gave us uninterrupted time to feel at peace with our surroundings. Considering we visited Bryce Canyon National Park in the peak summer season (late June 2011) it was nice to be able to get away from everyone on a trail – if you want a peaceful walk the Bryce Canyon Fairyland Loop Trail is an excellent choice.
