Nuclear Physicist, Drug Dealer and Iraq War Veteran

12 May 2010

Over that game of pool and the night that followed we met some really interesting Americans.

Patrick explained how he has two years of paid leave left (while studying) following his recent army service in Iraq where he operated a 50 calibre gun. Doc, Patrick’s flatmate had received an Honourable Discharge from the army and in the two years since has mostly made his income from selling a mix of pot and ecstasy but now prefers working as a home care taker for an elderly lady. Lastly Gus whom Patrick and Doc met earlier that day is from Seattle and is currently taking a break from his last year of undergraduate study as a physicist. He has been offered a job working for a company that is collaborating on a nuclear fusion project. [We spent a lot of time with these three Americans over the following few days and they are all really good people. It was a pleasure meeting them. Gus especially was a fantastic person to get to know, he’s been travelling by himself in Asia for a few months now; he loves the people and he loves the places, he has an excellent travelling attitude. What makes it more impressive is he had the worst experience I’ve heard in Bangkok, he experienced robbery and police corruption yet he holds nothing against the Thai people.]

You meet some great people travelling, compared to home both the locals and the tourists seem a lot more open to talking.
