Railay Lagoon & Lookout

Having so far been mostly negative about Railay let me now talk about one of those little adventures that you are initially sceptical about setting out on only for it to turn out as one of the best activities so far. On the map a lagoon is shown at one end of Railay, it turned out to be quite a scramble up to the lookout – they have even supplied ropes along the way. The lookout provided views over the east side of Railay and is a typical Thai lookout where you are on an overhanging ledge with a few hundred feet direct drop below. One good Samaritan must have had the sense to tie a rope between two trees on the verge of the drop. Not the kind of safety measures we’re used to in New Zealand, but perfectly adequate all the same.

From the lookout you can head to the lagoon, but this is a less treaded trail as parts of the descent are vertical climbs. We encountered a group of three Brazilian guys at the lookout, one of them didn’t make it down to the lagoon when his knee started giving him issues. One of the vertical climbs took us through a small cave!

It was well worth the effort getting to the lagoon, James described it as ‘eerie,’ there are vertical cliffs all around and the lagoon is an eerie blue colour. We ventured in for a swim, nice temperature and an amazing view while floating on your back. Regrettably it’s the kind of landscape that I simply cannot capture on my camera.
