Do I Want to Work on a Super Yacht?

02 – 09 October 2010

On Saturday 02 October I made my way back up to Fort Lauderdale, booking into crew accommodation run by The Neptune Group on the way. I paid for a one week stay upfront, whether or not I got a job it was going to be my longest time at a single commercial location while I’ve been travelling. I met my new flatmates who seemed nice if not a little too Jersey Shore and since it was a Saturday night we all went to a BBQ at one of the other crew houses that evening. They were a pretty interesting group of characters but I was feeling tired after Miami so didn’t stay long.

It was nice to have a house to relax in with no particular goals; I’d soon tweaked my CV away from finance (toward yachting) and uploaded it to a number of crew agency web sites; my effort however didn’t extend much further than this. I was more in need of direction than a job so I spent my time soul searching. What do I want to do? I had ran into something of a problem as I had no idea what I wanted to do tomorrow, let alone next week or with my life in general.

Fortunately by the end of the week I was a little clearer, I didn’t so much have a direction but I had managed to temporarily rule out finding a job*. Although I yearned for an adventure on the sea I very much felt that I hadn’t yet finished my land adventure. I decided I could not leave the United States before I’d seen Washington DC and New York city, and of course there was still all of Canada to experience.

With destinations to see my future plans were more certain and I was able to book a flight to Washington DC on Wednesday. With a plan I was also able to relax and engage more with my flatmates for the rest of the week. We had a couple of big table pong drinking nights which were pretty sweet and we also had an epic night out in Fort Lauderdale on a Thursday or Friday night, I can’t remember which. You know it’s going to be a big night when you head to a bar which is serving free drinks till midnight! On Saturday I bid my flatmates farewell and headed off in search of another place of accommodation for the three nights until my reasonably priced flight to Washington DC.

* Not wanting to work on a super yacht may also have had something to do with not wanting to spend my precious time polishing some rich assholes boat. The Bob Dylan song ‘Gotta Serve somebody’ comes to mind, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to serve some pretentious showy prick. (Maybe next year)

  1. With the given photos above, they serve as inspiration especially to those who are considering designing their yachts to make them more comfortable while traveling at sea. To customize the exterior and be the envy of others. To fill your yacht with things that you want and enjoy. Thank you for sharing such inspiring photos.

  2. Having the opportunity to board a super yacht and see many exciting places are the rewards of being able to work on such a magnificent sea vessel. Not all of us are given the chance to board or even see first-hand these incredible water crafts and to be join a crew and spend time to enjoy in the shores of Florida is indeed a memorable experience. These yachts are not just built for quality but of luxury and relaxation as well.
